Ed is an activist of a traditional bent. Born and brought up in Rochdale, educated in Bury and at Essex Uni and now studying part-time at Law School. He was on the NUS NEC 94-96 and British Youth Council management committee 95-97. He was on the board of the Pride Trust in 96 and has since been a trustee of the Anne Frank Trust and Refugee Council. He's an elected councillor and magistrate in the City of London and serves on the boards of a number of public bodies, including as deputy chair of the Whittington Hospital, close to where he and his partner live in Islington, North London.

Professionally, he ran public affairs and fundraising at Liverpool John Moores and City Uni's prior to going freelance in 2002. Since then, he's done a number of consultancy and interim roles, including as chief exec of Crusaid.

Politically, he's a lib dem (having previously - boo hiss - been a tory) and is also a member of liberty, the fawcett society and the libertarian alliance. He has campaigned his whole life to keep the state out of our private lives and in support of an equal and diverse society.
